Foothill High School
Syllabus, Grading Policy, And Management Plan
Teacher:
Mr. Bill Lombard
Grading Policy:
Letter grades are issued on the following percent scale:
90+ = A, 80+ = B, 70+ = C, 60+ = D, 59– = F
Students are graded on class work, homework, projects, quizzes, tests, and semester finals. Homework is assigned daily. Quizzes and tests make up the majority of the course grade. The Mathematics Department of the Shasta Union HSD has a policy that the majority of students’ grades are determined by in-class assessment, to include quizzes, tests, and final exams. In my classes the grade is comprised of 60% tests/quizzes, and 40% homework, projects, and miscellaneous items.
Management Plan:
General class structure: Students enter the class quietly and be in their seats by the time the bell rings. They then begin their daily warmup; after spending time on this, I explain the answers and ask for questions about previous night’s homework. There is an explanation of new work and/or an activity, and the balance of the class period is spent on the homework, test preparation, or project.
Discipline:
Students that are not quiet, or who choose to do something off task, may expect one of the following depending on the severity of the issue:
- I will call the student up and talk quietly, explaining what it is that should be happening.
- The student will be sent outside; after a few minutes I will talk with the student and explain how to modify the behavior to achieve a successful outcome.
- Points may be deducted from the student’s Citizenship grade.
- A call home will be made to enlist parental support.
- A call to the counselor will be made to get more information about the student.
- Classroom suspension with referral to assistant principal for one or two days.
- Parent/student/teacher and counselor/assistant principal conference will be scheduled.
- A referral to the assistant principal will be made for lunch detention if the above process does not cause change in behavior.
- School dress code is strictly enforced. One warning is given to students; after that, they are assigned lunch detention.
Attendance Policy:
- Students are allowed one free tardy per quarter; after that, they are assigned lunch detention.
- Regular attendance is expected for successful completion of coursework. Students with absences are expected to ask for assistance from the instructor. They will be given help either in class (preferred) or may make an appointment for help outside of class time.
- Missed work: students have a number of days equal to the number of days absent in which to make up the work.
- Missed test: Students absent the day of a test are expected to take a makeup test the day they return. The makeup test may be different than the original test. Students absent multiple days or having special circumstances will be given individual consideration.
Parent Communication:
- Parents/guardians may call FHS (547-1700) and leave a message on voicemail at extension 43082. Voicemail is checked regularly and given a reply unless instructor is absent that day.
- Parents/guardians may send email messages to blombard@suhsd.net and these messages are responded to at the instructor’s earliest convenience.
Other Items:
- It is assumed that all students will have daily access to a scientific calculator. A graphing calculator is not required, but strongly recommended. The TI-83 or TI-84 are the calculators that students will be trained on during class.
- Students will be provided with instruction on calculators and computers. They should have a password to the district network so they may explore math websites both in and out of class.
- Students are expected to be self-starting, on task, and motivated to succeed. Much is expected of these students, and much will be asked of them by the instructor.
- Projects and alternative assignments are a regular part of the course and provide students with additional avenues for success and comprehension. These may be extensions of problems found in the book or applications of concepts covered.
- Mr. Lombard reserves the right to amend items on this page due to the needs of individual classes.

Wow! What a thoughtful, detailed, and well-laid-out website you’ve created for your students. I hope they and their parents realize what a terrific resource it is, and use it often. I’ve already learned a lot from surfing around on it.
You have some lucky students. Great work, Mr. L!
