Here’s a project my students are working on as we head into our preparation for fall final exams. This is a way to practice for the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) test in April of next year. What follows is the directions I give my students.
———————————
STAR Fall Final Exam PowerPoint Project
Description of the project:
1. Choose one of the problem numbers from the list provided by Mr. L
2. Create a PowerPoint slide from the STAR Test having this same number.
3. Create 2 PowerPoint slides with variations of this problem. Suggestions:
- Change the numbers
- Change the diagram/graph
- Ask a different, but related, question
Numbering: For example, if your question is # 20, then write 20 at the start of your question; number the 1st variation as 20A; the 2nd as 20B. Make sure you provide four answers (A, B, C, D) for your questions, one of which is the correct answer.
Source of questions – The STAR test questions may be found online at:
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/css05rtq.asp
Format of the PPt slides:
Use font size 24 or larger for ease of reading
Use Tahoma font for uniformity (Arial/Helvetica is okay if needed)
Space out your question/diagram/graph for ease of reading
SAVE your slides if Mr. L asks you to EDIT them
Place your name at the bottom of your slides for credit
Give Mr. L a copy of your slides so he can collate them into one single PPt presentation. Choices:
- Email your file as an attachment to: blombard@suhsd.net – the very BEST WAY TO GIVE IT TO ME – please ask if you need help with this
- Burn your file to CD – write the file name on the CD
- Save your file to a Flash Drive – write the file name on the Flash Drive
DUE DATE: Friday, 5 December. You may submit early for EXTRA CREDIT. Make sure you tell me your name one of these ways:
- CLEARLY give your name on your email message.
- Write your name on the CD
- Put a sticky note or tape your name on your Flash Drive
The goal of this project: to provide all classmates with a nice way to prep for the Fall Final Exam. By doing this in a cooperative manner, it makes it easy for all of us to accomplish this goal. The quality of your work leads to good understanding and leads to high scores for everyone. Your final exam questions will be composed of those from the signup sheet.

Give this a try! It’s a great way to have a sense of community while you prep students for their tests. It has the added benefit of building PowerPoint skills in a collaborative mode while having a long-range view towards state testing months away (but still on the horizon).
