Triple Nine Wall Clock – Student Work

Here are almost two dozen clocks made of nothing but nines! Students use three 9′s instead of traditional numerals for the clock faces. Click the graphic below to view these neat products of student creativity.

I’m using Google’s image hosting service, Picasa, to post these images online. It’s a free service that’s easy to use and enables the user to add captions, tags, and has a number of nice features. You may also visit my Picasa site for a full-size look at these projects. Take a look and see if it might work for you.

The students are reinforcing algebra standards and concepts of Order of Operations, factorials, and square roots while working in a mathematically creative mode. They are also developing technology skills such as creating and positioning Text Boxes and circles, using angular measure to locate the hour marks on the clock face, and doing this artistically. These are projects that students will remember after leaving an algebra course. I encourage you to use projects in your own math class; you and your students will be richly rewarded!
