For Firefox users: enjoy the java app; this apparently does not work with Internet Explorer – see below.
Sudoku has become an extremely popular puzzle in the last few years, especially among math folks. I’ve introduced the puzzle to my students using small 4×4 and 6×6 grids that can be solved in a few minutes so they feel a sense of accomplishment and closure.
The website featured here, Sudoku Calculator, showcases a “do it yourself” Sudoku solver. If you are working on a standard 9×9 puzzle, click on the numbers given in your puzzle grid, and the calculator will only leave you with correct options in the remaining squares. This is a tremendous visual experience showing how the number of possibilities in each square decreases as you progress toward the puzzle’s solution. It will undoubtedly cause more students to become excited about solving these puzzles. One way to use this in class is to have your students work a sudoku puzzle while you run Sudoku Calculator on a projector for the whole class to watch. The interactivity is quite cool.
*** Now that I’ve gotten this far, I just found out some bad news. I’ve been using Sudoku Calculator with the Firefox web browser and it works great. I tried it with Internet Explorer and it doesn’t work at all – RATS! I’ll contact the webmaster to see what the problem is. Apologies to all who had trouble with this.

You must have Javascript enabled in your browser for the Sudoku Calculator to work. (Download Java for your computer at the Free Java Download website.) Use this Java app to gain new insight into Sudoku and get your students involved too!
